Statutory Public Interest Framework & Cultural Impact in Tours
Founded on principles of civic transparency, public accessibility, and multidisciplinary artistic inquiry, Association ELSE functions as an independent, non-profit organization under the French statutory law of July 1, 1901. Our registered office is located at 13 Rue Galpin Thiou in the historic city of Tours, within the Department of Indre-et-Loire. Since our formal registration with the Prefecture under RNA number W451001757 and national enterprise identifier SIREN 497663294, our overarching ambition has been to build an enduring bridge between advanced artistic experimentation and everyday community life.
Unlike commercial entertainment enterprises or ticket-driven theater agencies, Association ELSE does not engage in the sale of merchandise, commercial entertainment packages, or monetized consumer services. Every initiative curated under our umbrella is strictly non-profit and non-commercial. Our operating philosophy acknowledges culture not as a discretionary commodity, but as an essential public utility that enriches democratic dialogue, fosters mental and physical wellbeing, and unites citizens across diverse social backgrounds.
Mandatory Statutory Commitment & Financial Reinvestment
"All membership fees and dues are fully reinvested in the association's public interest missions." The association does not distribute dividends, bonuses, or financial returns of any kind to members or directors. All administrative assets, public subsidies, and voluntary contributions are channeled exclusively into public workshop venues, artist materials, educational supplies, and community access initiatives.
A Multidisciplinary Creative Triad: Choreography, Voice, and Music
At the core of Association ELSE’s artistic methodology lies the intentional convergence of three distinct disciplines: physical movement (choreography), vocal resonance (acoustic singing and spoken text), and original musical composition. Historically, European artistic institutions have often compartmentalized these practices into separate conservatories, dance companies, and musical ensembles. Our collective actively dismantles these silos. We conceptualize the human body as an integrated kinetic and acoustic instrument capable of generating rhythm, narrative, and harmony simultaneously.
In our Tours laboratories, choreographers work side-by-side with classical and contemporary vocalists, sound artists, and instrumental performers from the very inception of each research cycle. Dancers do not merely move to pre-recorded musical accompaniment; their physical gestures dictate acoustic parameters, activate resonant stage surfaces, and harmonize with live vocal polyphonies. Conversely, singers engage in somatic movement training that liberates breath support, spatial awareness, and choreographic interaction. This cross-pollination produces stage works that are genuinely cross-genre, immersive, and intellectually provocative.
Democratic Access: Breaking Down Socioeconomic Barriers to the Arts
One of the most persistent challenges facing contemporary choreography and experimental music is cultural elitism. Many residents feel intimidated by institutional theaters, perceiving experimental performance art as obscure, costly, or unwelcoming. Association ELSE directly confronts this exclusion by bringing high-caliber artistic research into familiar civic spaces: municipal community centers (maisons de quartier), public school gymnasiums, public parks, open courtyards, and local libraries across Tours and neighboring communes such as Joué-lès-Tours, Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, and Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire.
All of our introductory workshops and community creative sessions are provided either completely free of charge or through nominal membership dues that cover basic insurance and studio operating costs. Furthermore, we maintain a comprehensive solidarity waiver program ensuring that no participant is ever turned away due to financial constraints. By democratizing the tools of creative production, we empower citizens who have never stepped foot into a dance studio to discover their own expressive potential, collaborate with professional mentors, and perform before their neighbors with dignity and pride.
Transparent Institutional Funding Model
How is Association ELSE funded if we sell no commercial tickets or products? Our non-profit operational budget relies upon an ethical, multi-tiered public support architecture designed to protect our public utility independence:
- Public Cultural Grants & Municipal Subsidies: Project-specific allocations awarded by local municipalities, intercommunal bodies, the Department of Indre-et-Loire, and regional cultural authorities committed to artistic decentralization.
- Statutory Membership Contributions: Modest annual dues paid by active association members, all of which are 100% reinvested into community workshop supplies, studio rentals, and safety insurance.
- Non-Monetized Partnerships & In-Kind Municipal Support: Generous access to public rehearsal spaces, civic halls, and technical equipment provided by civic partners in Tours.
- Civic Philanthropy & Public Interest Donations: Voluntary gifts from private individuals and cultural foundations dedicated to expanding youth education and public arts accessibility.
Every euro received by the association is subject to rigorous oversight by our elected Board of Directors, presented during our annual General Assembly, and published openly in our annual financial impact audits. We believe that public trust is the foundational currency of any authentic non-profit organization.
The Importance of Real Civic Dialogue
Artistic research cannot occur in an ivory tower disconnected from the social realities of our territory. For this reason, Association ELSE organizes periodic civic roundtables and open forums where residents, local educators, healthcare professionals, and cultural leaders gather to discuss how artistic practices can address urgent community challenges, such as loneliness among senior citizens, youth disconnection, and intercultural integration.
During these assemblies, we actively solicit feedback from neighborhood participants to shape our upcoming seasonal programs. If residents in a particular district express a strong desire for intergenerational vocal choirs, our artistic team responds by designing tailored residency programs that match those community aspirations. This participatory governance ensures that Association ELSE remains a responsive, community-driven institution rather than a top-down administrative entity.
