Practical Action Directory and Community Programs

Mandatory Statutory Commitment & Accessibility

"All membership fees and dues are fully reinvested in the association's public interest missions." All educational workshops and rehearsals are delivered either free of charge or through non-commercial solidarity rates designed to remove economic barriers for all community participants.

Overview of Public Utility Action Lines

At Association ELSE, artistic production is not treated as an insular commercial enterprise, but as a dynamic civic process that unfolds in continuous dialogue with the community. Operating from our registered headquarters at 13 Rue Galpin Thiou in Tours, our seasonal programming is structured into four complementary action lines that span creative experimentation, community pedagogy, professional mentoring, and public performance.

Each action line responds directly to the cultural development priorities of Indre-et-Loire by fostering social cohesion, promoting lifelong artistic education, and ensuring that cutting-edge interdisciplinary arts remain universally accessible to all citizens, regardless of their prior training or financial means.

Dancers and movement artists exploring choreographic improvisation in our Tours laboratory

Program 1: Contemporary Choreographic Creation Labs

Our Choreographic Creation Laboratories function as an intensive research incubator where emerging and established movement artists develop original physical vocabularies. Unlike conventional commercial dance studios focused on repetitive choreography drills, our labs prioritize somatic exploration, kinetic counterpoint, and spatial architectural design.

Operational Structure: Artists gather for 12-week research cycles held at subsidized municipal rehearsal facilities across Tours. Dancers engage in rigorous morning somatic warm-ups followed by improvisational structured tasks exploring weight distribution, non-verbal narrative, and acoustic responsiveness.

Community Integration: Every Thursday evening, our doors open to neighborhood residents for "Open Studio Rehearsals." Attendees observe the raw creative process, ask questions about movement design, and provide real-time spectator feedback that informs the evolution of the piece. Over the past year, these labs hosted 24 resident dancers and welcomed over 450 public observers.

Program 2: Community Vocal Choir & Polyphonic Voice Research

The human voice is our most intimate, direct instrument. Our Community Vocal Choir and Polyphonic Voice Research program provides an inclusive platform where citizens of all ages discover vocal expression without the prerequisite of sight-reading or formal conservatory training.

Pedagogical Methodology: Guided by experienced vocal pedagogues, sessions explore diaphragmatic breathing, resonance placement, harmonic overtone singing, and traditional polyphonic songs from Mediterranean and French folk heritages. Vocalists learn to synchronize breath cycles, establish microtonal harmonies, and connect physical movement with acoustic projection.

Civic Impact: The ensemble convenes weekly in Tours, gathering high school students, working parents, and retired seniors. By performing free acoustic concerts in local public libraries, elderly care residences, and historic cloister courtyards, the choir brings vibrant social vitality to neighborhood communities.

Program 3: Acoustic Experimentation & Live Musical Synthesis

Bridging contemporary instrumental performance with electronic sound design, this program pairs resident composers and acoustic instrumentalists with physical performers to create living auditory environments.

Technical Exploration: Our sound engineers and composers utilize acoustic instruments (cello, percussion, prepared piano) alongside contact microphones, modular synthesizers, and spatialized speaker arrays. Rather than playing static background music, sound artists manipulate audio parameters in direct real-time response to the dancers' gestures and vocal timbres.

Educational Accessibility: Each creative cycle includes free "Acoustic Discovery Masterclasses" where youth and adult hobbyists learn the fundamentals of sound synthesis, microphone placement, and field recording techniques in Tours.

Program 4: Youth Artistic Mentorship & School Masterclasses

In partnership with regional primary schools, middle schools (collèges), and high schools (lycées) across Indre-et-Loire, Association ELSE conducts comprehensive educational outreach programs that introduce young people to the multidisciplinary performing arts.

Curricular Modules: Professional choreographers and vocal artists visit school campuses for multi-week residencies. Students are introduced to contemporary dance improvisation, vocal modulation, stage lighting basics, and collaborative group dramaturgy. The program culminates in a public student showcase hosted at a municipal theater, attended by families, teachers, and civic leaders.

Vocational Pathways: In addition to artistic expression, these masterclasses expose adolescents to behind-the-scenes cultural professions, including stage direction, sound engineering, production administration, and lighting design, cultivating future cultural vocations in the region.
